We Don't Tolerate Bullies At Our School!!
At Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, the Peer Leadership group is working on a project called “Stop Bullying-Take a Stand”. The group is planning to inform middle-schoolers at FHTMS on life long lessons through video productions and other interactive activities.
The idea is to have six consecutive lessons on bullying. In the first three weeks, Teacher Advisories will be given activities developed by the Peer Leadership students to give them fun, informative and interactive mini lessons. The project will cover lessons on bullying, harassment, cyber bullying and the potential power of bystanders.
In the fourth week of this project, they are going to produce a video story and broadcast it throughout the school. The video is going to include stories about differences between girls and guys bullying, interviews of students, some short video clips and information on when to speak to an adult.
In the fifth week they are going to have Mr. John Halligan come visit our school-a guest speaker that Peer Leadership organized. John Halligan is an inspirational speaker who travels the country talking about how to prevent bullying because his son took his own life after dealing with depression and harassment in his school.
After this inspirational speaker visits their school, they are hoping to have a poster contest in which students can compete to win the best bully-free poster.
By doing all of this, the Peer Leadership students are striving for an environment in their school that is safe, friendly and bully free! We Don't Tolerate Bullies At Our School!!

November 2010 Girls Conference
By Nadia Merali
A group of seven 8th grade girls went with Ms.O to a Girls Conference in Essex to increase understanding of safe, healthy relationships. We met with other teenage girls from around the state to talk about this important topic.
Some of the things we learned included the following:
A Healthy Relationship is…
Trusting
Hard Work
Commitment
Asking for what you need
Encouragement
Safe
Listening& Supportive
Sharing Responsibilities
Compromise
Closeness
Recognizing& Accepting Differences
Openness
Empathy
Respect
Friendship
Honesty
Communication
A Healthy Relationship ISN’T…
Jealousy
Possessiveness
Obsession
Threatening
Cruelty
Violent
Blaming& Belittling
Inequality
Control
Dependency
Isolation – limited contact with friends
Intimidation
Withholding affection
Fear
Proving yourself
Manipulation
Expecting all your needs to be met by your partner
*Our society often portrays violence and aggression as acceptable or even cool. It is never okay for someone to shove you or push you around. If your partner feels it is ever okay to be violent with you it is a RED FLAG.
Stop Bullying -Take a Stand Spring 2011
Tuttle Peer Leadership students have been focusing all year on the issue of bullying. We have watched videos, researched, discussed the topic, and had groups of High School students present their experiences and insights on this topic. Beginning next week, Peer Leadership will be giving TA's activities to educate all Tuttle students about the topic of bullying. The topics of our project: Stop Bullying – Take a Stand , will include definitions, explanations, myths & truths, types of bullying, & the power of bystanders. The Peer Leadership students have designed these activities to appeal to their peers and teach about this important topic. One of our lessons will be a SBNN show! Our activities will conclude with a poster contest.
Peer Leadership has also invited John Halligan, a well known speaker on the topic of bullying, to speak with all Tuttle Students as part of this project in early May. More information will be forthcoming on his talk to parents.
The students hope this project will make a difference with their peers and help create a safer, more inclusive school environment!
**** Peer Leadership is bringing John Halligan back to Tuttle on May 2nd 2011!****
He will speak with all students!

Reflections on John Halligan’s Presentation
from Peer Leadership Students
On March 31st, 2008 Mr. John Halligan came to talk to FHTMS about the effects of bullying. His family lost their son after many years of his being bullied and dealing with depression. His speech was so powerful and touched many people! Some of our friends who watched the presentation realized how their actions affected other people. Most of us became more conscious about what we were saying and doing. We are very glad he came and his story will never be forgotten.
When John Halligan visited us, he gave a speech on bullying, and made an impact on many students and parents. He talked about the loss of his son, Ryan, and the impact bullying had on his life. It was “a heartbreaking experience” and “moved” many people in the audience. Some of the comments we heard were: “His presentation was life altering.” “He changed my outlook on bullying, life and how I react to people.” “Your story changed my prospective.” Here is one student’s perspective on the presentation: “ I think that the story was much more powerful having him tell the story, than having someone else who hadn’t experienced bullying as such a terrible experience. He changed my outlook on life and I think that he touched more than just my heart.”
A Tragic Story
John Halligan came to FHTMS on March 31 2008. We were very fortunate to have such a great speaker to tell his tragic story. Within his very close family they experienced a major bullying tragedy. John’s son, Ryan was only 13 years old when he committed suicide on October 7th, 2003. Ryan suffered from depression and was bullied at school and online. In the fifth grade is when all the bullying started. They would bully him about his academic weaknesses and many other things. In 6th grade the bullying was on and off, so his parents weren’t too concerned. When he was in 7th grade though the bullying worsened! Surely enough, the kids that had bullied Ryan in 5th grade were the main bullies in middle school too. With all this bullying going on, Ryan finally couldn’t handle it and tragically took his life! Many of the students around the world don’t realize how much bullying can impact others lives. After, John comes to speak with our school we are all hoping that it will bring a new understanding about what the affects of bullying can be. It made a difference to us. Please take everything that John Halligan said seriously. It could be you in the shoes of a kid that is being bullied one day, so help stop it now.

I think your advice column is GREAT!
Can you either put it on the home page or give directions and on how to get to the info from the home page (and what it is about). It won't be seen without it being more visible!
What do you think? Thanks! Ms.O
